The new year is here, and that means it’s the ideal time to shake things up a bit and get a fresh start. For a lot of people, that means finally taking the next step toward improving or correcting flaws in the way they look. It’s no surprise that looking great makes us feel great too. Not only do we feel more attractive, but when we know we’re putting our best self forward, we feel more confident and positive too.

Still, not everyone wants to go through the discomfort, downtime, and considerable cost of invasive procedures like facelifts or microdermabrasion in order to get that picture-perfect, more youthful complexion. At Nu Image Aesthetics & Wellness Institute, we help women and men enjoy more beautiful complexions with a simple in-office treatment called microneedling. Microneedling taps into your skin’s natural healing ability to diminish the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and scars (yes, even acne scars) while also restoring tone and firmness to your skin. And it’s so effective, lots of A-listers like Jennifer Aniston, Kim Kardashian, and Brad Pitt have become die-hard fans.

Yes, it does use needles

The name “microneedling” might be enough to give you pause, especially if needles make you squeamish. But pay attention to the first part — micro — and you’ll soon see you have nothing to worry about. At Nu Image Aesthetics & Wellness Institute, we use the patented SkinPen®, the only microneedling device that’s received FDA clearance. The SkinPen uses a series of very tiny, extremely fine needles. These needles are much, much smaller than the needles used for vaccines or dental anesthetics. In fact, they’re so small and so thin, you won’t need sedation for your treatment. Just a little numbing cream applied to your skin shortly before your treatment is all it takes to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure.

During your microneedling treatment session, the SkinPen is moved gently over your skin and the tiny needles at the tip of the device go to work, penetrating your skin to jump-start your body’s healing responses. Most procedures take from a half hour to an hour, depending on the number of areas you’re having treated and the issues that are being addressed. Once your treatment is complete, your skin will be reddish and sunburned-looking, and it will probably feel tingly and mildly sensitive when it’s touched. These effects are completely natural, and they’ll clear up within the next day or so. There’s no downtime, so you can get back to your regular activities right away. As with any skin treatment, it’s important to provide extra sun protection for your skin during the first week or so after treatment to aid in healing.

How it works

That’s what to expect during treatment. But just how does microneedling work to diminish wrinkles and scars and improve skin texture and tone? It all has to do with biology. When we're young, our bodies produce a lot of collagen. Collagen is a strong, flexible protein fiber that's present in a lot of our tissues, including our skin. These fibers group together to form networks that help keep skin strong and resilient, and they also play a big role in healing. When we're young, it's these collagen networks that help our skin feel firm and "bounce back" when we touch it. And it's also what helps our skin heal and repair itself after it's damaged, especially when it's damaged intrinsically by the sun. As we get older, though, we produce a lot less collagen. Over time, our skin becomes more lax and less firm and resilient. Facial features start to sag, and wrinkles and lines form around our eyes, nose, and other areas. Tiny scars suddenly become more visible.

Microneedling works by stimulating the body's natural healing processes, which in turn ramps up the production of collagen in localized areas of treatment. The tiny needles cause controlled damage to the deeper layers of skin, causing new collagen formation so skin heals itself and becomes firmer over time, diminishing the appearance of lines and scars. New collagen networks help skin look and feel more toned. What's more, the tiny openings or channels made by the needles enable other products like PRP to reach those deeper layers as well so they can be more effective. And it does all this without surgery or downtime.
