Summertime Tips to Keep the Sun From Wreaking Havoc on Your Skin

It’s finally summer. The season where you get a few long weekends and beautiful days to finally kick back and enjoy the warm temperatures and bright sun. While a day out in the sun may be great for your tired mind, it can wreak havoc on your skin.

Nothing wipes away the extended glow of a day outside quite like lathering on the aloe and avoiding sunburned and damaged areas. Spend too much time unprotected, and your risks for serious issues like skin cancer rise considerably.

Luckily, you don’t have to change much of your routine to make sure your time in the sun is carefree. By following a few tips and developing some easy habits, you can keep the sun from seriously damaging your skin.

Use sunscreen

This may sound obvious, but sunscreen is the best way to protect your skin – no ifs, ands, or buts about it. About 62,000 people develop skin cancer every year, and sunscreen is your first level of defense. Before you grab the first sunscreen you see on your way outside, consider that all sunscreen is not the same. The best sunscreens check off all of the following:

Don’t disregard sunscreen when it’s cloudy. UV light can get through clouds that block visible light. In fact, it can pierce through clouds, mist, and fog.

Wear sun-protective clothing

It all starts with a hat. Although baseball caps can help, the best choice is headwear that covers your ears. If sunscreen isn’t your thing, many companies now sell UV-deflecting clothing. Many of the garments provide the same level of protection as SPF 30 sunscreen. If you go this route, don’t forget to put sunscreen on non-covered body parts.

Stay hydrated

Your skin is 64% water. When you feel dehydrated, imagine how your skin feels. If you have trouble remembering to drink water, try to combine with another activity. To keep your skin at its best, hydrate and reapply sunscreen every two hours.

Don’t forget the face and lips

It’s easy to forget your face and lips after taking the time to apply sunscreen to the rest of your body. However, these areas need protection too. Lip balms with sunscreen provide the best overall protection for your lips.

When it comes to sunscreen for your face, the main brands can often feel sticky or slimy. Odds are your favorite cosmetic brand or lotion manufacturer makes a sunscreen that will feel much more natural.
